Help is not free

The Declaration of Independance is a powerful piece of paper. It outlines the protocols for being an American. What it doesn't do is promise you a life of leisure, wealth or prosperity. It guarantees the right to pursue happiness. It doesn't guarantee that happiness. Why then do we have so many people who believe that they are 'owed' something? I have found myself upset at more than a few teens who have no idea of the value of a dollar, a good day's work, or responsibility for their own actions. Grown adults who would rather live off of someone else's hard work, and never lift a finger. I'm not talking about unemployment or programs for people designed to offer a helping hand. I myself lost my job just over one year ago and have been unlucky in finding a new one. If it hadn't been for unemployment, I'd be sunk. But I am still out there, keeping busy, writing, gardening, working on something. You won't find me sitting on my duff waiting for my next check. I am talking about people who have children just so they can stay on welfare. People who fake disabilities so they can get free money. Those who steal from insurance companies, hard working individuals and the elderly. What happened to us?

I'm greedy. I want more of life, more security, more love. I'm willing to work to achieve those things. I never expect to be handed anything. Thank you mom and dad for instilling in me those moral and ethical values. How do you feel about this issue?
